Robert's Story

After serving in World War II, Robert LeRoy Bailey attended The Art Institute of Chicago where he received his degree in design, painting, and sculpture. He also earned a second degree in abnormal psychology from The University of Chicago.
Robert lived in Chicago for 20 years with his first residence upstairs from Minsky’s Burlesque house. He created stage and set designs for them, and invited some of the local talent to pose for his paintings during their dance breaks. During the 50s and 60s, Robert became well known for his photography and sculpture. He was vice president of the Chicago Society of Artists and helped organize Exhibit “A”, a group of 24 local artists including Edna Arnow, Donald Schweikert, Angelo Testa, Victor Perlmutter, Bruno Bak and Morris Barzani.
In 1959, Robert received a grant from the Mexican government to capture imagery of Mayan children, villages, and schools, which resulted in a black-and-white photographic exhibition in Mexico City (now part of the Smithsonian Collection). In 1963, Robert earned his highest honor by receiving the International Design Award for his sculpture.
