I have been honing my artistic talent since I was a young boy. Throughout the years, I have worked with various mediums such as oils, watercolor and pencil. Dating back to my high school days, I have been known for my cartoons and caricatures. I also am especially creative when it comes to experimenting with new ways to use traditional media and coming up with non-traditional ways of expressing my creativity.
I have designed creative programs and banners for Grand Rapids churches and have created a travelogue of artwork with my renditions of scenic locations I have visited with my wife, Linda. I played an integral role on LaGrave Christian Reformed Church’s art committee and was involved in launching its member art exhibit, which is now an annual event. I also was the featured artist at Castle Park Gallery for Holland’s annual Gallery Walk.
I suffered a stroke on August 8, 2008, which affected my speech and movement on the right side of my body. When I first began to respond, I was not able to speak at all so I used sketches and drawings to communicate with my family. I spent a total of three months in the hospital and inpatient rehabilitation, including eight weeks of rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed. After my stroke, one of my first attempts at artwork was drawing cartoons of my therapists and therapy sessions. I recently began to work again with pencil and have attempted some watercolor.
