On December 3, 1975 - as Toni’s life was just beginning - a man broadsided her car in a terrible accident. Toni broke her neck and jaw, and was in a coma for six weeks. When she woke up, Toni learned that she suffered quadriplegia. She completed therapy at Mary Free Bed and participated in one of the first Fine Art Exhibitions hosted by the Mary Free Bed Guild.
Toni was a right-handed student before her accident, but became left-handed to continue with her art. She received her bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University.
