Continuing Education at Mary Free Bed

The Office of Medical Education (OME) is dedicated to promoting excellence in education. Mary Free Bed's Continuing Medical Education program is accredited through The Grand Rapids Medical Education & Research Center for Health Professions. Educational activities are designated as Category 1 Credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.

The goal of the OME is to support physicians' learning and improvement that contributes to their maintenance of competence, licensure, certification, and privileges in the context of competency in professionalism, patient care, systems based practice, interpersonal skills, and medical knowledge. The OME oversees Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Education (CE) activities and strives to respond to the education needs of physicians and allied health professionals by identifying factors that impact:

The practice of medicine

New technologies

Medical devices

Therapeutic drugs

Other scientific advances in medicine

Practice guidelines

Changing health policies and regulations

Changing health care delivery systems

To achieve our goal, we take a proactive approach in our efforts to add, enhance, or expand programs and develop new educational strategies and information technologies for delivering education. The OME provides a wide range of learning opportunities for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other health professionals. Today's demands on practitioners' time limits their ability to attend traditional courses; to respond to this problem, we also support innovative approaches to education through Web-based courses, CD-ROM, and enduring materials (i.e., journal articles accredited for CME and CE).

Continuing Medical Education (CME) topics include diverse clinical topics and activities with a focus on professional responsibilities related to patient safety and advocacy, new technologies, research, health care policy, ethics, and compliance. All continuing education activities are designed with an emphasis on relevance, personal effectiveness, and scientific integrity. Program content is designed to meet the following objectives:

Increase awareness of new techniques, technologies, and therapeutic modalities and how their applications impact patient care in a rehabilitation setting.

Provide an update on diseases affecting the rehabilitation process.

Discuss rehabilitation treatments and approaches.

Identify areas of liability for self, peers, and other health by reinforcing the principles of examination, assessment, and evaluation skills.

Sharpen the skills and expertise of the professional staff by reinforcing the principles of examination, assessment, and evaluation.

Increase practitioners' awareness of health policy issues and the effects on patient care.

Discuss practice management topics.
