Adapted Swim Lessons

Many qualified community swim lessons are offered in the Grand Rapids area that offer swim instruction in a setting conducive to a healthy and active life for a child. But, if this option isn't possible because of the nature of your child's disability, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital offers an alternative. The goal of this program is to teach swim skills and increase swimmers' knowledge of safety around the water. Swim lessons offered through MFB are for youth with developmental disabilities who require 1:1 instruction from a certified water safety instructor with expertise in working with people with disabilities.

Interested participants can register for the classes below on a first-come first-serve basis by calling Maria at 616.242.0352. A number of questions will be asked to determine whether the child's swim instructor will be through MFB or through a local community program. MFB adapted swim lessons will be offered quarterly through our Recreation Connection Newsletter. If your child isn't scheduled into any of the offered time slots, you will have another chance the following quarter.
