Grand Rapids, Michigan -- Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital will mark a significant milestone in its $62.5 million expansion and renovation when one of the final steel beams is placed atop the new building at 10 a.m. December 19, 2013.
The Crowning Ceremony will include remarks from CEO Kent Riddle and an appearance by the Catholic Central High School Drumline. The ceremony, a Scandinavian tradition that includes placing an evergreen tree on the structure to symbolize growth and good fortune, will conclude with a pyrotechnic surprise.
Beginning this week, employees and former patients have been invited to sign the 20-foot steel beam, which is located just outside of the hospital’s main entrance.
The addition of the new building means Mary Free Bed will more than double the number of inpatient beds. New construction is slated for completion in the fall, 2014. Renovation of existing buildings will then take place and should be completed in the winter, 2015.
