Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital has expanded its number of pediatric physiatrists by hiring a third doctor who specializes in this relatively rare field of medicine. Physiatrists are medical doctors who receive fellowship training in physical medicine. Fewer than 300 pediatric physiatrists are practicing nationwide.

Amanda Ayala, M.D., brings a full-time focus to treating children with cerebral palsy, brain injuries, dystonia and other conditions that limit mobility and function. “I help children attain milestones,” Dr. Ayala says. “I keep them walking or help them to walk better. I help to maximize their potential for attaining milestones.”

Dr. Ayala joined the Mary Free Bed Medical Group following her fellowship at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She embraces the hospital’s advanced methods of dealing with pediatric spasticity, specifically through the use of the Intrathecal Baclofen pump. The computerized pump delivers medication that manages muscle tone directly into the spinal canal.

Dr. Ayala is a graduate of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and completed her residency at Temple University Hospital/Moss Rehabilitation Program. Her pediatric rehabilitation fellowship emphasized managing spasticity.
