Top Wheelchair Tennis Players in GR Tourney

The Midwest Wheelchair Outdoor Championships, which takes place July 10-13 at MVP Athletic Club- Crahen, has attracted the top wheelchair tennis players in the U.S. and other highly ranked players from Japan, France and Canada.

Hosted by Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital’s Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports Program, the tournament is expected to attract about 70 participants, from novice players to Paralympians.

This year, the event will include the top three men’s players and two of the top five women’s players in the U.S. They are:

·      Stephen Welch of Texas (No. 1 in U.S. and No. 25 in the world)

·      Steven Baldwin of California (No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 50 in the world)

·      Matthew DeVlieger of Grand Rapids (No. 3 in the U.S. and No. 127 in the world)

·      Emmy Kaiser of Kentucky (No. 1 in U.S. and No. 15 in the world)

·      Karolina Lingyte of Alabama (No. 5 in the U.S.)

DeVlieger, who only has been playing in the Open Division for nine months, is a member of the Mary Free Bed team and winner of the 2013 National Collegiate Wheelchair Tennis Championship.

Also playing will be Japan’s Yoshinobu Fujimoto (No. 26 in the world) and other outstanding men and women players from Canada and France. Tournament details are available here.
