Plagiocephaly Helmets

Baby wears orthotic helmet to treat plagiocephaly at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital.Mary Free Bed Orthotics & Prosthetics is one of the leading centers nationwide for providing Orthomerica cranial remolding orthoses used to treat deformational plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, scaphocephaly, and other head shape deformities in infants 3 - 18 months old.

Mary Free Bed Orthotics uses a STARscanner to scan infants' heads so each helmet has a custom fit. The STARscanner eliminates the need to cast a child's head, and scans in less than two seconds. Mary Free Bed was the seventh facility in the country to install an Orthomerica scanner, and have now installed a second scanner in their Holland office.

Orthotists use the digital scanning technology to measure head shape, create custom helmets, and work toward maximum symmetry over a 3 - 5 month period. Mary Free Bed's system is FDA approved and is minimally intrusive to the child. Results are digitally measured and compared to pre-treatment conditions by means of computer scans.

Cranial remolding helmets work by applying gentle, constant pressure on your baby's growing skull to redirect her skull's growth. For this reason, it is best to begin using a plagiocephaly helmet at the earliest age possible, typically when your child is 4 -or 5-months-old.
