ParaStep
ParaStep consists of a microcomputer attached to electrodes. With use of a special walker, paralyzed muscles are stimulated at different times in the gait cycle to allow for walking. Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital is one of about 25 rehabilitation facilities in the United States specializing in spinal cord injury that offers this program. A physician must refer individuals for evaluation. Candidates who are accepted into the program are required to complete 32 one-hour sessions of physical therapy (a 12-24 week training period).
This program is not for everyone. It is difficult and expensive, but for some individuals it provides an additional method of mobility. The ParaStep Training Program and the ParaStep system may or may not be covered by your insurance. To be considered for Mary Free Bed's ParaStep Program, you must meet certain medical, clinical, and functional criteria.
