Community Reintegration after Spinal Cord Injury
As part of your spinal cord injury rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed, you may participate in the community reintegration program. This program consists of outings to various locations in the Grand Rapids area.
Outings are an important part of your spinal cord injury rehabilitation because it allows you the opportunity to practice skills and activities you have learned in your therapies. Outings are often your first step back into the “real world" after you have experienced a spinal cord injury.
At the appropriate time in your spinal cord injury rehabilitation program, your doctor may write an order for off-grounds activities. You may then be taken into the community with an occupational therapist or recreational therapist. You may go alone or in a group setting depending on the skills you need to practice and/or your interests.
Outings take place throughout the day, and in the evening. Examples of outing locations and activities include: restaurants, grocery stores, malls, movie theaters, fishing, basketball and tennis practices, picnics, and other locations of interest. As a patient at Mary Free Bed, you may be asked to help with selecting a location, and planning an outing.
