Meet the Mary Free Bed Amputee Treatment Team
An amputation can affect you in a variety of ways — physically, socially, psychologically, even spiritually. At Mary Free Bed, we implement and integrate patient treatment using a multidisciplinary team approach to maximize independence despite the loss of a limb.
Physiatrist (physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine):
Manages the treatment of each patient and coordinates the work of other professionals on the therapy team
Rehabilitation Nurse
Evaluates and monitors each patient
Develops care plans
Focuses on patient’s care, comfort, and education
Prosthetist
Provides an evaluation to determine if a prosthesis is appropriate and makes recommendation based on the patient’s personal preferences
Instructs patients on how to use and care for their prosthesis
Works with the family to determine patient’s needs
Fit and supervise the fabrication of the prosthetic device
Social Worker
Helps improve coping and adjustment skills for patients and families
Facilitates family education
Helps identify and coordinate financial resources
Helps coordinate discharge plan and continuum of care
Physical Therapist (PT)
Evaluates patient’s balance, mobility, strength, and muscle function
Provides physical training and teaches techniques for everyday functioning, including managing a wheelchair, getting in and out of bed or chairs, and walking
Occupational Therapist (OT)
Evaluates patient’s self-care skills
Teaches techniques and skills for eating and drinking, dressing, toileting, bathing, hygiene, basic homemaking, and community re-entry
Psychologist
Helps patients and families with adjustment issues related to having an amputation
Registered Dietician/Dietician Assistant
Evaluates nutritional needs
Provides individualized medical nutrition therapy and education for patient and patient’s family
Recreational Therapist
Provides assistance and techniques to resume leisure activities
Introduces patients to new leisure activities and community resources
