OrthoSEAT
Orthotic Seating, Equipment, and Assistive Technology or OrthoSEAT is part of Mary Free Bed Orthotics and Prosthetics. OrthoSEAT provides high-quality, therapeutically correct seating orthoses, as well as other custom assistive devices.
Therapeutic mobility evaluations provide a thorough, team-oriented examination of mobility and postural support needs. Both client and caregiver perspectives are considered for all environments of equipment use. Optimizing functional capability and improving comfort through appropriate orthopedic support are primary goals.
A computerized pressure mapping system may be used to assist in cushion selection or decisions related to pressure sores.
A variety of manual and powered mobility devices are available for trial and simulation. Seating solutions may incorporate commercially available components or custom designed modifications.
Fabrication of custom equipment is completed in the Rehab Technology Center by experienced technology specialists with direct input from the client, caregiver, and therapists. Training in equipment use and maintenance happens throughout the construction and delivery phase.
Custom Seating Orthoses
Your physician has prescribed a custom seating orthoses for you to aid in maintaining a good position in a wheelchair. A custom seating orthoses provides support to keep you securely in your chair. A custom seating orthoses can also make you more comfortable and place you in a more functional position.
Warranties
Our seating systems are warranted against manufacturing or material defects for a period of six months from the day you are issued your new system.
Seating is not an exact science. It may take adjustments to seat you just right. Please work with us to ensure that your system gives you the best possible result.
Four to six weeks following your final visit, we will follow up to see how you are doing. If you have any concerns before that, please call immediately.
For Your Convenience
The center is located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in the Mary Ives Hunting Center at 360 Lafayette SE. Our office is open 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Someone is available to schedule appointments during these hours.
Mobile seating services are also available in the West Michigan area for clients who are best served in their school or healthcare facility. This allows for improved care provider input in some cases. Both evaluation and construction visits may be scheduled on a mobile basis, as necessary.
A signed prescription from your physician is needed for most appointments. Our evaluations are 1.5 to 3 hours; construction visits are 2 to 3 hours.

Other Services
Mary Free Bed orthotists respond to calls from hospitals, nursing facilities, and other institutions. We are on-call 24 hours a day for emergency services at 616.242.0300. We accommodate walk-in patients around our regular appointment schedule.
