Voice Program

The Voice Program at the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital Outpatient Therapy Center is dedicated to improving the vocal function our patients need for home, community, work, and school environments.

Voice Program Services

A comprehensive evaluation and assessment process allows us to provide individualized therapy for each patient.

Services Include

Acoustic/perceptual assessment
The VisiPitch is used to capture a small recording of the voice. The information is analyzed to reveal differences in phonation time, frequency (pitch), intensity (loudness) and perturbation (shakiness of voice). This information provides a baseline of function and describes the difference from the norm.

Videoendoscopic evaluation
A digital recording of vocal cord movement under a halogen light source reveals differences in structure and function of the vocal mechanism.

Videostroboscopic evaluation
A digital recording of vocal cord movement under a strobe light source reveals differences in movement of vocal cord symmetry, amplitude, periodicity, mucosal wave and glottal closure.

Nasometry
The nasometer has a specialized headset designed to measure the airflow through the nose rather than through the mouth when speaking.

Therapy
Patients work with a specially trained speech therapist. Voice therapy may focus on some or all of the following areas: vocal hygiene; relaxation techniques; oral resonance therapy; easy onset therapy; optimal breathing techniques; laryngeal strengthening; and digital manipulation.

Patient and family education
We consider family involvement to be a key component of our program. We educate both the patient and the family on any potential safety concerns. We provide training, and support to ensure that the patient’s treatment is able to continue at home, and in other settings.

Who Uses These Services

Our program treats both pediatric and adult patients with abnormal vocal quality due to vocal strain, cancer, vocal nodules, polyps, and a variety of other causes.
