The ALS Clinic's mission is to provide high quality, comprehensive care for patients with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), supply the resources needed to maintain freedom, and provide hope for the future through education and research.
Services
We provide care, offer support, and recommend resources. Services include evaluations and ongoing care.
Who Uses These ALS Services
- Individuals who have been diagnosed with ALS.
- We offer our patients care and consultation through the ALS Clinic.
Evaluation
An evaluation should be made as soon as possible after diagnosis so we can discuss a treatment plan and provide information about resources and other support services available.
Ongoing Care
Patients generally visit the clinic every 2 - 4 months. At each visit, the patient will be assessed on the status of ALS progression, assistive education, and device needs. The clinic is located in Grand Rapids at Mary Free Bed.
Additional Services at Mary Free Bed
We may recommend other specialists and programs at Mary Free Bed such as:
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation - Provides direction with therapy needs
- Social Worker - Helps to coordinate external resources
- Rehab Technology Specialist - Assists with specialized mobility or communication needs
- Physical Therapist - Provides education and training on energy conservation
- Psychologist - Addresses psychosocial adjustment
- Orthotist -Helps with fitting and adjusting orthosis which can contribute to comfort and better mobility
- Area Specialists - Area experts outside of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital may be recommended as well. For example, pulmonary medicine can assist with accurate interventions for breathing assistance and gastroenterology can assist with options for nutrition assistance.
