Grand Rapids Thunder Quad Rugby
Although the Grand Rapids Thunder quad rugby team, sponsored by Mary Free Bed, uses different equipment than able-bodied rugby players, the aggressive competition is just as intense. The players speed across the court on their wheelchairs, throwing the ball to team mates while simultaneously dodging jabs from opponents. Quad rugby is fast moving, highly aggressive, and brutal in chair-to-chair contact.
There is a new sports team in West Michigan - the Grand Rapids Thunder. This sport is only available for individuals with quadriplegia; their disability must cause impairment in both their lower and upper extremities. It is a high-intensity sport played with heavy duty sport chairs that are fit to each individual and is played on a basketball court. Complete with chair-to-chair contact, it's always exciting to watch! Must be 15 or older to play.
