The pediatric rehabilitation specialists at Mary Free Bed use an integrated team approach to put your child on the path to recovery. Our pediatric program is ranked in the top five percent nationally for patient satisfaction, compared to other independent rehabilitation hospitals. Affordable lodging on campus and nearby make it easy to stay with your child as he or she rehabilitates after serious injury, illness or surgery.
For more than 125 years, Mary Free Bed has focused exclusively on rehabilitation. Our secure pediatric unit is designed for and used solely by children and teens, with a large therapy gym, age-appropriate social spaces and a procedure room. Specialized treatment spaces and technology maximize your child’s potential for recovery.
Your child’s length of stay depends on individual needs and goals. The average length of stay for our pediatric patients in fiscal year 2016 was less than 22 days, compared to the national average of 25.5 days. Meanwhile, our young patients gained more functional improvement than the regional and national averages, according to WeeFIM data provided by the Uniform Data Set for Medical Rehabilitation.
A number of specialty services (orthotics, prosthetics, custom wheelchair seating, warm water therapy pool, an outdoor Therapath) and therapeutic technology (ArmeoSpring, Lokomat Pro, Vision Coach Interactive Light Board, ZeroG) are available on our Grand Rapids campus to enhance your child’s rehabilitation and promote a better outcome. The comprehensive therapies and treatment we offer is complemented by our caring culture. We establish personal connections with our patients and their families beginning at your hospital bedside in Ohio. Our Virtual Services use the latest telehealth technology to securely and quickly connect you with our healthcare providers, and our admissions liaisons go the extra mile to make your transfer seamless for you and your family.

Why Mary Free Bed?
Improving the quality of life for children and teens has been an important part of Mary Free Bed’s mission for more than a century. Last year, our inpatient program served more than 150 children and teens, partnering with each one to achieve his or her maximum potential.
Here are a few reasons why families choose us for pediatric rehabilitation:
• Our team includes doctors, nurses and therapists who specialize in pediatric rehabilitation. We also have a certified child life specialist
• We have fun! Kids are more likely to participate in therapy – and will be more successful – if they enjoy it. Our innovative staff is adept at using interactive games and other means to captivate and motivate your child.
• The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International has endorsed Mary Free Bed with Pediatric Specialty Accreditation, which means we set and meet high standards for family-centered, developmentally appropriate pediatric patient care and satisfaction.
