West Michigan Whitecaps visit Mary Free Bed

Four members of the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Class A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, visited Mary Free Bed on Thursday, Sept. 1, to the joy of pediatric and adult patients alike. Catcher Shane Zeile along with pitchers Sandy Baez, Mark Ecker and Beau Burrows posed for pictures, signed autographs and talked baseball with patients and staff.

Earlier in the week, Baez was honored by the Whitecaps as the “Community Service Award Winner” for his appearances throughout the West Michigan community during the 2016 season.

Chelsea, the granddaughter of Mary Free Bed staff member Russ Gardner, was excited to meet the players. She had attended her first Whitecaps game the previous night and caught a baseball in the stands. The players graciously signed the souvenir and praised her skill and good luck.

The Whitecaps and Mary Free Bed have a long-standing relationship. The team sponsors the Mary Free Bed’s Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports’ softball team the Rollin Whitecaps.
