Grand Rapids, Mich. – Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital will be helping people with physical challenges secure bicycles of their very own this weekend.
Bikes for the Rest of Us will give about 80 children and adults the opportunity to be evaluated and fitted for a bicycle, tricycle or handcycle customized to accommodate their specific needs. Therapists, adapted bicycle vendors, service groups and others will be on hand to help. And thanks to a donation from the Mary Free Bed Guild, participants can receive a bicycle at a discounted cost.
This year, 68-year-old Brent Hays will be among the participants. Hays, a Hudsonville man who contracted polio at the age of 5, has never before ridden a bike. He’s hoping he can be fitted for a handcycle that will allow him to ride alongside his grandchildren.
