Grandville, Mich. – Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital’s 10th Annual Adult Charity Tennis Tournament takes place this weekend, January 4-5, at Ramblewood Tennis & Health Club in Grandville.
More than 50 players, both able-bodied and in wheelchairs, will participate in the doubles tourney, which is a fundraiser for Mary Free Bed Wheelchair Tennis Program. Funds are raised through sponsorships, registration fees and a raffle. The event is free and open to the public.
While most of the matches will feature able-bodied players, some also will feature players in wheelchairs competing alongside able-bodied players, says Erin Fouty, head coach of Mary Free Bed’s wheelchair tennis team. Wheelchair tennis rules, which allow up to two bounces before returning the ball, will apply for players in wheelchairs.
“People are always amazed when they watch wheelchair tennis for the first time,” says Fouty, who can be reached at 616.540.2669 for tournament details.
