GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Triathletes, marathon runners and athletes who want to take it to the next level have access to state-of-the-art technology and services now offered by Mary Free Bed Sports Rehabilitation. Its new clinic at the SpartanNash YMCA features West Michigan’s only Performance Lab.

The Performance Lab features technology new to the area, including the iDXA body composition scanner and VO2max, which measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take in. It also has one of only three sweat composition testing units available in the Midwest.

Services are beneficial for athletes of all abilities and ages, from those trying a sport for the first time to high school, collegiate and elite athletes focused on reaching their full potential.

In addition to the VO2max, iDXA Scan and sweat composition testing, the Performance Lab offers:

  • Lactate threshold, Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and metabolic efficiency point testing
  • Running form analysis, anaerobic capacity, components of fitness and pulmonary function

“Building the Performance Lab has been a dream come true,” said Todd Buckingham, the team’s lead exercise physiologist and a seven-time national champion and two-time world champion in triathlon and duathlon. “I get to help athletes achieve their goals, whether that’s a Boston Marathon qualifying time or setting a personal best in a sprint triathlon.”

Mary Free Bed Sports Rehabilitation provides specialized therapy and support to athletes who experience injuries, from concussions to sprains. Virtual consults with board-certified clinicians also are available to help athletes understand their injury, how to manage it and when to consult a physician.
