TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – More than 2,800 dedicated athletes from across the country will descend on northern Michigan next week to swim, bike and run in the first-ever Ironman 70.3 Traverse City. Mary Free Bed at Munson Medical Center rehabilitation experts will be at the challenging endurance event to provide medical services and support for participants.
Ironman is a series of long-distance triathlon races held around the world. The 70.3 triathlon on Aug. 25 consists of a 1.2-mile swim in West Grand Traverse Bay, followed by a 56-mile bike ride through Leelanau County and a 13.1-mile run along Boardman Lake. About one third of the athletes participating in Traverse City are from the Grand Rapids area.
As the event’s official medical services provider, Mary Free Bed at Munson Medical Center physicians, nurses and rehabilitation clinicians will support athletes before, during and after the race. The team will provide education, medical services and massage and stretch in Ironman Village on Aug. 23-24 as well as on race day.
On Aug. 25, 40 staff members will cover nine medical stations along the course and at the finish line. Twenty clinicians will provide massage and stretch for athletes at the expo and the race.
“Restoring hope and freedom goes beyond helping during injury or illness,” said Terence Reuben, director of Sports Rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed and the triathlon’s medical team executive director. “We also focus on health and wellness of individuals working to remain active, so this partnership with Ironman is a perfect reflection of this mission.”
Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital expanded its relationship with Munson Medical Center at the beginning of 2019. The two facilities signed a joint operating agreement to serve more patients across northern Michigan.
