Mary Free Bed wheelchair basketball coach inducted into National Hall of Fame

Grand Rapids, Mich. – One man is truly making a difference in the lives of wheelchair athletes in West Michigan and across the nation.

Lee Montgomery, head coach of the Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports basketball team, will be inducted into the National Wheelchair Basketball Association’s Hall of Fame for his achievements as a player, coach, and mentor. The induction ceremony will be held at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) Tournament, April 17-21 in Louisville, Kentucky. He has been associated with the NWBA (now in its 65th year) since 1977.

Montgomery will also assist the Wounded Warriors Project at Camp Pennington in San Diego from February 25th to March 7th. He will teach Wounded Warriors to play wheelchair basketball, preparing them for the Armed Forces Wheelchair Basketball Games – a competition between the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. After these games, our servicemen and women will create wheelchair basketball leagues in their local communities based upon the foundations Lee provides at Camp Pennington.

Media crews are invited to meet with Montgomery and see his Grand Rapids Pacers team in action this coming Saturday evening, February 16th at 6:00 PM at Muskegon Catholic Center High School – 1145 W Laketon Ave. Muskegon, MI 49441. The Pacers will play the Muskegon Catholic Central boys varsity team in an exhibition game.
