Mary Free Bed’s Pediatric Speech and Language Services focus on providing you educational tools about language stimulation techniques you can use to help your child. We provide strategies to help promote your child’s language skills while modeling appropriate techniques and collaborating with other providers like your child’s school, day care and Early On. Services are available to help your child from newborn through the teen years.

Our multidisciplinary therapy staff has extensive training and experience in treating children with communication disorders due to conditions such as:

• Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
• Cerebral palsy
• Sensory dysfunction
• Feeding disorders
• Autism
• Birth-related conditions
• Neurological disorders
• Genetic conditions
• Post-concussion
• Speech/language delay due to medical diagnosis

Program services include:

Evaluation and/or treatment – Please note that your child must first have his or her condition assessed by a physician who writes a prescription for an evaluation and/or treatment at Mary Free Bed. An evaluation may consider everything from your child’s case history and behavior to his or her feeding, hearing, verbal expressions and voice. Treatment is specific to your child’s needs and may include aspects such as training for the use of augmentative communication devices.

Family and caregiver education – Family involvement is a key component of our speech and language therapy program. We provide training and support to ensure the child’s treatment is able to continue at home, at child care and in other settings.

The speech and language program also provides a parent education program through The Hanen Centre. The program, It Takes Two to Talk, is designed specifically for parents of young children (birth to 5 years old) who have been identified as having a language delay. In a small, personalized group setting, parents learn practical strategies to help their children learn language naturally throughout their day together. Please contact us — using the form at the bottom of the page — for further information regarding group dates and pricing.

Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend other specialists and programs available at Mary Free Bed, such as psychology, videostroboscopy or videofluoroscopic swallow studies. Resources for augmentative communication devices, including evaluations and assessments, are available through our Rehab Technology Center.
