Pelvic + Abdominal Rehabilitation

Helping kids gain comfort, control and confidence.

Simple Solutions to Pelvic + Abdominal Rehabilitation

Children and teens who experience bladder or bowel challenges often feel embarrassed or isolated—but they’re not alone. Millions of kids deal with similar issues every day, making sleepovers, school or sports stressful.

At Mary Free Bed Kids, our Pelvic and Abdominal Rehabilitation (PAR) Program provides specialized, non-invasive therapy to help children and adolescents regain control, build confidence and continue to do what they love. PAR program services are currently available at Mary Free Bed Holland and the Mary Free Bed Grand Rapids Campus.

Our compassionate pediatric therapists work closely with families to address these sensitive conditions in a supportive, child-friendly environment—because every child deserves to feel comfortable and confident.

Who We Serve

We provide care for children and teens ages 4 to 18 who experience chronic or recurring pelvic floor dysfunctions, including:

  • Urine or stool leakage
  • Constipation
  • Urinary retention
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis)

These issues may stem from conditions such as:

  • Encopresis (bowel incontinence)
  • Constipation
  • Dysfunctional voiding
  • Giggle incontinence
  • Stress incontinence
  • Vesicoureteral reflux
  • Urinary retention or abdominal pain
  • Enuresis (bedwetting)

Every child’s condition is unique, but most can be successfully managed through specialized pelvic floor therapy and education.

What We Do

Our Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy Program focuses on helping and educating children and adolescents to retrain the muscles that control bladder and bowel function.

This gentle, evidence-based approach is designed to:

  • Improve pelvic floor coordination and strength
  • Reduce accidents and urgency
  • Promote healthy bladder and bowel habits
  • Decrease abdominal and pelvic pain

Our Mary Free Bed Kids therapists have specialized training in treating pediatric pelvic floor dysfunction and understand the physical and emotional aspects of these conditions.

Our Approach to Treatment

We empower children and families through education, hands-on care and home strategies to encourage lasting improvement. Common Treatments Include:

  • Behavioral strategies: Techniques to decrease urinary frequency, improve toileting habits and reduce accidents.
  • Provide education regarding the pelvis, bladder, bowels, pelvic floor musculature, urination, and digestion.
  • Dietary education: Nutrition and hydration guidance to promote regular bowel movements and bladder health.
  • Manual therapy: Gentle techniques to relieve soft-tissue tension and improve muscle coordination.
  • Posture and toileting training: Proper body positioning for successful and pain-free elimination.
  • Individualized home exercise programs: Activities to reinforce muscle control and improve function between therapy sessions.
  • Biofeedback therapy: Non-invasive surface electromyography (EMG) technology helps children visualize and learn how to properly engage and relax pelvic floor muscles.

Our therapists ensure that every plan is age-appropriate, supportive, and focused on empowering both the child and the family.

Family Education and Support

We know pelvic health concerns can be emotional for kids and their families. That’s why education and communication are at the heart of our care.

Parents and caregivers receive guidance on:

  • Creating healthy toileting routines at home
  • Reducing stress and anxiety around bathroom use
  • Encouraging hydration and nutrition habits that support digestive health
  • Monitoring progress and maintaining long-term results

We partner with families to build trust and understanding—ensuring each child’s experience is comfortable, compassionate and successful.
