Three Mary Free Bed leaders have been named Notable Leaders in Health Care by Crain’s Grand Rapids Business, a recognition that celebrates individuals making a meaningful impact through leadership, collaboration and service.
Honorees are selected based on professional accomplishments, organizational influence and community contributions. This year’s recognition highlights leaders across the Mary Free Bed System, including our medical group and the Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics Program. In addition to being featured in Crain’s, Mary Free Bed at Home, a transitional program that helps patients navigate life outside the hospital following inpatient rehabilitation, was recently recognized by Newsweek for quality and outcomes.
The featured leaders include:
Benjamin Bruinsma, M.D., Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Benjamin Bruinsma has spent more than 35 years at Mary Free Bed helping people regain independence after injury or illness. A graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine, he completed his residency at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak before joining Mary Free Bed in 1989.
As a rehabilitation physician, Dr. Bruinsma specializes in helping patients restore function and quality of life through non‑surgical, team‑based care. He directed Mary Free Bed’s inpatient amputation and stroke rehabilitation programs for more than three decades and helped establish the Outpatient Amputation Program. The comprehensive, lifelong amputee care model he helped build is now replicated by health systems nationwide.
As chief medical officer, Dr. Bruinsma leads Mary Free Bed’s medical group across five states, supporting more than 100 providers. His visible, hands‑on leadership and focus on teamwork, quality and provider well‑being have strengthened engagement and systemwide performance, all while centering patient care.
Scott Riddle, Vice President, Mary Free Bed Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics
Scott Riddle leads the Mary Free Bed Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics Program, providing custom orthotic, prosthetic and bionic solutions that help people move, function and live independently.
A University of Michigan graduate with advanced training from Northwestern University, Scott is a certified prosthetist/orthotist who founded his own company before joining Mary Free Bed in 2021.
Under Scott’s leadership, OPB has expanded to 13 locations across Michigan, Indiana and Virginia, serving more than 14,000 patients each year. His focus on collaborative care, innovation and access has strengthened patient experiences while delivering consistent growth. Scott also champions Mary Free Bed’s partnership with the Range of Motion Project, helping extend life‑changing prosthetic care to underserved communities in Guatemala.
Trey Kubizna, Vice President of Operations and Administrator, Mary Free Bed at Home
Trey Kubizna leads Mary Free Bed at Home, extending Mary Free Bed’s rehabilitation expertise beyond the hospital and therapy gyms to support recovery at home.
A licensed physical therapist with more than 20 years of experience in rehabilitation and home health care, Trey has held a variety of clinical and leadership roles focused on access, continuity and quality. Since stepping into his current role in 2019, he has overseen Mary Free Bed at Home on both an operational and administrative level, guiding teams through growth while keeping patient needs front and center.
Mary Free Bed at Home provides in‑home rehabilitation services that help patients transition safely from hospital or clinic to daily life. Trey’s leadership emphasizes collaboration, staff development and high‑quality care delivery, ensuring patients receive the same expertise and compassion at home that Mary Free Bed is known for in all care settings.
Together, these leaders reflect what it means to restore hope and freedom through rehabilitation, advancing care across the continuum and supporting patients wherever they are in their recovery journey.
“At Mary Free Bed, leadership is about showing up for each other and for our patients,” said Bruce Brasser, chief operating officer of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation. “Dr. Bruinsma, Scott and Trey lead with purpose, compassion and expertise. Their work strengthens our team and helps ensure the people we serve feel supported during their entire recovery journey.”
