Cranial Remolding

Restoring Hope and Freedom

Ensuring the best outcome for your baby’s head shape and development

Helping Babies Grow Symmetrically

At Mary Free Bed Kids, our Cranial Remolding Program provides expert care for infants ages 3–18 months with head shape differences, including:

  • Plagiocephaly (flattening on one side of the head)
  • Brachycephaly (shortened head shape)
  • Scaphocephaly (long, narrow head shape)
  • Post-operative craniosynostosis (following surgical correction)

We know these diagnoses can feel overwhelming for new parents. That’s why our Orthotics, Prosthetics + Bionics specialists combine advanced technology, experience and compassion to guide your baby’s treatment from the very first visit through completion.

Our goal is to help your baby’s head shape develop naturally and symmetrically supporting healthy growth and confidence for your family every step of the way.

What is cranial remolding?

Cranial remolding uses a custom orthotic helmet or band to gently guide your baby’s head into a more symmetrical shape as they grow.

Your baby may be referred to Mary Free Bed Orthotics, Prosthetics + Bionics for an evaluation after your pediatrician or therapist notices head shape asymmetry or limited neck movement.

What happens during the initial appointment?

  • Our specialists will perform a head-shape assessment using 3D scanning technology.
  • They’ll determine whether repositioning, tummy time or helmet therapy is most appropriate.
  • The Orthotics, Prosthetics + Bionics Team will create a custom-fit cranial remolding orthosis (CRO) when indicated.

The average treatment lasts three to five months, though timing and results vary depending on your baby’s age, growth and individual needs.

How Cranial Remolding Works

The orthosis guides your baby’s natural growth by gently holding the fuller areas in place and allowing space where it’s needed most. It doesn’t squeeze the head or apply pressure—it simply redirects growth to encourage a more balanced shape.

Advanced Technology for a Precise, Comfortable Fit

Mary Free Bed Orthotics, Prosthetics + Bionics is one of the nation’s leading providers of cranial remolding orthoses.

Our experts use 3D imaging technology to capture an accurate image of your baby’s head. This scan is painless and takes less than two seconds; it’s also safe for eyes and skin.

From there, your certified orthotist:

  • Reviews and measures the scan data
  • Designs a custom helmet based on your baby’s growth pattern and symmetry goals
  • Ensures a comfortable, secure fit that allows gentle correction over time

This technology-driven process ensures your baby receives precise, effective and safe treatment tailored to their unique anatomy.

What to Expect During Treatment

Cranial remolding at Mary Free Bed Kids is designed to be a positive, parent-supported experience. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Evaluation: A certified orthotist completes a 3D head scan and thorough assessment.
  2. Treatment Plan: If a helmet is recommended, you’ll receive a detailed plan for wear time, follow-up visits and care instructions.
  3. Fittings and Adjustments: Regular visits allow our orthotists to monitor progress and make modifications as your baby grows.
  4. Completion: Once your baby’s head reaches optimal symmetry and growth milestones, your team will guide you through next steps and long-term monitoring.

  • Improve neck and trunk control
  • Increase range of motion
  • Develop shoulder strength and alignment
  • Perform gentle stretching and strengthening
  • Use manual techniques to relax tight muscles

Early therapy helps enhance your baby’s mobility, posture, and comfort—while supporting the success of cranial remolding treatment.

How long will my baby wear the helmet?

It depends on your child’s age, severity and growth rate. Most treatments last between 3-5 months.

Will my baby tolerate it?

Yes — babies usually adjust very well! We will help you slowly introduce the helmet during the first week.

How often are appointments?

Typically, every 3-4 weeks to check progress and adjust the helmet as your baby grows.

Is it covered by insurance?

The initial evaluation is always free. If a helmet is needed, our team will work with your insurance provider to check coverage before moving forward.

Do you scan at every visit?

Not always, but we may re-scan to track progress and determine when treatment is complete.
