Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital has helped to restore hope and freedom to thousands of people for more than a century. We’ve seen tremendous growth, from new programs and technology to expanded services across Michigan and northern Indiana. A recent $66.4 million expansion and renovation includes a new 167-bed hospital that makes Mary Free Bed the fifth-largest freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the country. We’re helping even more adults and children than ever before.

But, growth is more than bricks and mortar. We are committed to excellent research and education in addition to the unsurpassed clinical care we continue to provide.

Mary Free Bed has partnered with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine to create the John H. Butzer Center for Research and Innovation. This collaboration sets the stage for leading-edge research and evidence-based rehabilitation care with a focus on outcomes measurement.

NewsweekWe’re also collaborating with Van Andel Institute, a world-class biomedical research organization focused on finding effective therapies for Parkinson’s disease, cancer and other diseases. This offers residents many opportunities for high-quality research.

Mary Free Bed is an independent teaching hospital focused exclusively on medical rehabilitation. We’re accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), both as a sponsoring institution and as a residency program.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency consists of four years of study: a transitional year of general medicine followed by three specialty years at Mary Free Bed. Graduates are eligible for board certification by the ACGME/American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR).
