The Interdisciplinary Approach to Prosthetics: A Team Approach to Hope and Freedom

When children and teens experience limb differences, limb loss, orthopedic conditions or require orthotic or prosthetic devices, they need solutions designed specifically for growing bodies. At Mary Free Bed Kids, our Orthotics, Prosthetics & Bionics Program is dedicated exclusively to patients 18 and younger. We combine advanced fabrication, child-centered design and specialized pediatric expertise to help young patients build mobility, independence and confidence throughout each stage of development.

Tailored Care for Growing Bodies

Whether your child needs an orthotic brace, a cranial remolding helmet, a prosthetic limb or adaptive bionic technology, our pediatric specialists understand the rapid physical and developmental changes children experience. Each device is created to adapt to growth, activity levels and long-term goals. From early mobility to playing sports as a teen, we provide support for every phase of childhood.

Conditions and Needs We Support

Our program supports:

  • Children with congenital limb differences, limb loss and amputation from trauma or surgery
  • Neuromuscular and orthopedic conditions requiring bracing
  • Scoliosis
  • Cranial reshaping needs
  • Developmental delays
  • Prosthetic updates as children grow
  • Adaptive sports or bionic technology needs

Our team works with families and pediatric specialists to ensure devices promote comfort, function and participation.

What Sets Mary Free Bed Kids Apart

Our pediatric-centered approach recognizes how growth, school and social environments can impact the emotional development of children. We use advanced fabrication technology and high-quality materials to create custom devices designed for durability, comfort and function.

We’ll work with you as your child grows, planning regular follow-up appointments to make updates and fitting adjustments so devices can continue to support your child’s development. Our family-centered care model ensures devices support daily routines, school tasks, recreation, sports and independence.

Collaborative Care Across the Pediatric Continuum

Mary Free Bed Kids works closely with leading pediatric health systems, including Corewell Health, Bronson Healthcare and Beacon Health System, to ensure children receive coordinated, comprehensive care. Through these partnerships, our team collaborates with pediatric orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, rehabilitation medicine physicians and specialty care teams to align device planning with each child’s broader treatment plan.

This integrated approach ensures prescriptions, therapy plans, surgical considerations and long-term mobility goals are all connected. The prosthetics and orthotics specialists also collaborate with the Mary Free Bed Kids Pediatric Rehabilitation Team to provide seamless, collaborative care.

Team members include:

  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech-language pathologists
  • Physiatrists (rehabilitation physicians)

How to Begin

If your child may benefit from orthotic, prosthetic or bionic support, the first step is a pediatric rehabilitation evaluation. Our specialists will assess needs, discuss goals with your family, and create a customized plan that integrates device support with broader therapy services.

  1. We start with a comprehensive evaluation that includes mobility assessments, growth projections and activity goals. We develop an understanding of your child’s daily environments.
  2. Based on this information, our specialists design and fabricate custom devices in one of our three fabrication facilities or in partnership with outside manufacturers.
  3. After fabrication, children attend a personalized fitting appointment to ensure proper alignment, comfort, and function.
  4. We also provide training for children and caregivers on safe use, device care, and how to integrate it into everyday life.
  5. We schedule regular follow-up visits to help maintain proper fit and performance as your child grows.

Outcomes That Matter

Children supported through our device program often experience improved mobility, posture, balance, strength, comfort and confidence. Many return to school and recreational activities with fewer limitations. Our proactive, child-centered planning helps reduce device complications and supports long-term success.

Preparing For Your Visit

Before your appointment, your physician will evaluate your condition and provide a prescription for your prosthesis. Once we receive it, our scheduling team will contact you to set up an appointment at a time that’s convenient for you. Our clinics are open Monday through Friday—please check with your preferred Mary Free Bed Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics location for specific hours.

Your First Visit

During your initial visit, your prosthetist will talk with you about your medical history, current activities and personal goals. They’ll also assess your range of motion, muscle strength and take precise measurements, along with an impression of your residual limb to ensure the most comfortable fit. Prosthetic limbs come with a variety of features and options, from basic designs to more advanced technology. Together, we’ll help you choose the prosthesis that best fits your lifestyle, goals and financial considerations. Your prosthetist will be with you every step of the way, ensuring you receive the personalized care and support you need.

Understanding Your Insurance

It’s important to check with your insurance provider regarding coverage for prosthetic devices. You’ll have a dedicated patient service representative who will handle prior authorization and provide a detailed estimate of your financial responsibility. Our in-house billing team will submit claims directly to your insurance company. If co-pays or other costs apply, or if your insurance doesn’t cover the full amount, final responsibility for payment rests with you. To assist, we offer interest-free monthly payment plans and a charitable funding program if needed. You can find a list of our commonly accepted insurance providers below.

Custom Fabrication and Fitting

You’ll have multiple appointments with your prosthetist to ensure your prosthetic limb is custom-tailored for the best fit and function. During this process, you’ll be fitted with a diagnostic test socket as a trial. Your prosthetist will make adjustments based on your comfort and needs before your final prosthesis is created by our skilled technicians.

Receiving Your Prosthesis

Once the fitting process is complete and your prosthesis is ready, you’ll have a delivery appointment to take your new device home. Your prosthetist will ensure you feel confident and prepared, providing all the information and guidance you need for using your prosthesis at home.

Ongoing Care and Support

Regular follow-up appointments with your prosthetist are important, especially as you adjust to wearing your new prosthesis. Your prosthetist will continue to make adjustments and ensure you have any necessary supplies, such as socks and liners. Rehabilitation is a journey, and your Mary Free Bed prosthetist will guide you through every stage, ensuring you receive the personalized care and support you need.

Patient Financial Responsibility

It’s important to confirm with your insurance provider whether orthotic and prosthetic devices are covered. You’ll be supported by a dedicated patient service representative who will obtain prior authorization for services and provide an estimate of your financial responsibility. Our in-house billing team will handle submitting the claim to your insurance company. If co-pays or other cost-sharing apply, or if your insurance doesn’t cover the full amount, final payment responsibility rests with you. To assist, we offer interest-free monthly payment plans and a charitable funding program if needed. You can find a list of our commonly accepted insurance providers above.
