Mary Free Bed Guild Names First Executive Director for Historic Organization

The Mary Free Bed Guild is proud to announce the appointment of Amy Stuursma as its first executive director, marking an exciting new chapter in the Guild’s 134-year history of service to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation ,the West Michigan community and beyond.

Stuursma brings more than 17 years of nonprofit leadership experience as the executive director of the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation, where she guided the organization through unprecedented growth and community impact.

“We all know Amy well – she has been an active and dedicated member of our organization since joining five years ago,” said the Guild co-presidents Mary Beth Brown and Maureen Kozel. “Most recently, she completed her presidential term, during which she led the development of our strategic plan and continued serving as fund board president. Throughout the interview process, the hiring team was deeply impressed by her clear vision, proven executive leadership and visible passion for our mission and community.”

As the Guild’s first executive director, Stuursma will oversee strategic initiatives, member engagement and philanthropic partnerships to advance the Guild’s mission to support Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation and ensure exceptional care for its patients, their families and staff.

Founded in 1891, the Mary Free Bed Guild has been the heart and foundation of the hospital’s success – helping it grow from a single bed into one of the nation’s leading rehabilitation systems. The Mary Free Bed Guild’s impact touches every aspect of the hospital, from enhancing  patient experiences to employee appreciation and community engagement.

About the Mary Free Bed Guild
The Mary Free Bed Guild is a nonprofit organization of women volunteers dedicated to restoring hope and freedom through philanthropy, advocacy and leadership in support of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation. Made up of over 120 dedicated women, they serve on all hospital boards and committees, extending their mission beyond the hospital walls. To date, the Guild has donated more than $25 million to organizations that empower people with disabilities. This includes the lead gift for the Mary Free Bed YMCA, the world’s first universally designed health and wellness facility.
