Mary Free Bed welcomes inaugural class of PM&R residents
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Four physicians from across the country have begun their post-graduate training in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation as Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital launches its first medical residency program.
The rigorous training program, approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, encompasses clinical, educational and research opportunities in all areas of PM&R, including spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation care, pediatrics and cancer.
“This inaugural class of residents will continue to shape Mary Free Bed as an innovative, academic institution,” said Dr. Kelly Armstrong, co-director of the program.
The three-year residency is structured to teach four residents per year.
“By July 2019, we will have 12 full-time doctors in training working with us,” Armstrong said.
All rotations are based at Mary Free Bed, which recently completed a $66.4 million expansion and renovation of its downtown Grand Rapids campus. Mary Free Bed provides the most comprehensive rehabilitation services in the region, including acute, sub-acute and outpatient rehabilitation, and home health care.
“Our inaugural class of residents come from diverse training backgrounds and have found their true calling in rehabilitation medicine,” said co-director Dr. Carolyn Vollmer.
They are:
- Jason Coombs, DO, a graduate of Touro University California in Vallejo. Following a surgical internship at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Coombs served as a flight surgeon for the U.S. Air Force. He will continue his military service through Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County.
- Thomas Hordt, MD, completed medical school at St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies. He completed his first post-graduate year in internal medicine at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Queens, N.Y., and was a member of the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
- Christopher Meadows, MD, completed medical school at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., and an internship at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
- Anthony Truong, MD, earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., and completed two years of an obstetrics and gynecology residency at Ochsner Health System in New Orleans.
The Mary Free Bed Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program is accepting applications.
