NASC members raise thousands for Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports
Grand Rapids, Mich. — The National Association of Sports Commissions’ (NASC) Sports Legacy Fund on Thursday, April 7, 2016, presented $27,000 to Mary Free Bed’s Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports Program (WAS).
The money was raised during the 24th NASC Sports Event Symposium hosted April 3-7 in downtown Grand Rapids. It is the highest-ever amount of any NASC Sports Legacy Fund donation to an organization in the host city of the annual symposium.
Alicia Hass, sports coordinator for WAS, called the gift a “great honor.”
“There are thousands of individuals with disabilities in West Michigan who want to participate in a sport. They want to feel included, encouraged, empowered. That’s what we are here for,” Alicia Hass said. “The support network from organizations like NASC and the West Michigan Sports Commission is how we continue to provide life-changing opportunities for children and adults with disabilities.”
WAS was selected as the 2016 beneficiary of the NASC Sports Legacy Fund, which focuses on non-profit organizations that provide individuals – particularly at-risk youth, veterans, and those with physical or intellectual disabilities – opportunities to participate in sports and encourage healthy lifestyles.
Every year, the Mary Free Bed Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports program serves more than 700 children and adults in West Michigan through a variety of organized team sports, clinics and camps. Learn more: mfblegacy.wpengine.com/sports.
