Application Review & Requirements

Thank you for your interest in our program! Mary Free Bed utilizes the AAMC’s Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for all application review. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis – there is no deadline to apply to our program, but we recommend submitting applications early.

We are committed to completing a holistic review of applicants, personally reviewing each application we receive. This takes time, and we appreciate your patience as we conduct our review.

To apply, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a medical or osteopathic student in good academic standing with your institution.
  • Have passed (first attempt not required) either USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Part 1 – osteopathic applicants are not required to take the USMLE examination.
  • Submit a completed application through ERAS.
  • Submit a minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation
    • There is no requirement on what specialties your letter writers must practice within, but it’s encouraged that at least one of them is from a practicing physiatrist who can speak to your skill set as it applies to our field.
    • Applications will be reviewed but may be deferred if less than three letters are available at the time your initial application is received – we understand that timing of letter submission may be variable and will review your application once it is complete

Geographic Preference

Geographic preference may be utilized by applicants who wish to demonstrate a strong interest in completing residency training in a particular area.

A geographic preference for our region is not required in order to be invited for an interview with our program.

Program Signaling

Program signaling can be utilized to show a heightened interest in a particular program. Their use in physiatry is still in its early stages. Applicants are encouraged to utilize a program signal for any program they are particularly interested in, including “home programs” and programs that they have completed away rotations at, in accordance with guidance from the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Association for Academic Physiatrists.

A program signal is not required in order to be invited for an interview with our program.
