Scholarships

Outstanding students pursuing their career goals have the opportunity to receive one of two scholarships awarded by the Mary Free Bed Guild.

The Guild has awarded more than $1,000,000 in scholarships since it established the Diversity and Ability Scholarships. The goal is to reward high-achieving students and hope they’ll consider Mary Free Bed when it’s time to join a workforce dedicated to restoring hope and freedom.

Ability Scholarship

The Mary Free Bed Guild created the Ability Scholarship Program in 2013 for people who meet challenges similar to those faced by the patients Mary Free Bed treats.

Award

An individual is eligible to apply for a one-year scholarship for tuition, room and board if the established criteria are met. The scholarship amounts vary depending on individual needs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must possess a diagnosed physical disability related to a brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, limb difference or overcoming any other serious acquired or congenital neurological condition treatable through rehabilitation.
  • Must be able to competitively apply oneself in the desired field of study, potentially with reasonable accommodations.
  • Student currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited college or university in at least a half-time status (half time as determined by the school).
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other volunteer activities.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to serving diverse populations.
  • Permanent resident of Michigan

The Mary Free Bed Guild reserves the right to revise the conditions and procedures for the Ability Scholarship Program, including termination of the program.

Diversity Scholarship

In 2002, the Mary Free Bed Guild created the Diversity Scholarship Program to promote diverse staffing to better meet the rehabilitation needs of patients.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Currently enrolled in or accepted in an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student in a nursing program or graduate-level physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, therapeutic recreation, orthotics or prosthetics, or neuropsychology program
  • Demonstrated leadership ability through participation in community service, extracurricular or other volunteer activities
  • Black or African American, Asian, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaskan Native
  • Demonstrates a commitment to serving diverse populations
  • Permanent resident of Michigan
