Spook-tacular Fun for Pediatric Patients at Mary Free Bed

October 25, 2025

With Spooky Season in full swing, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital brought the Halloween magic to its youngest patients with its annual Trunk-or-Treat style event.

Pediatric patients and their families enjoyed a haunted “Scare-apy Garden” filled with festive food, games, and trick-or-treating fun. Hospital staff and their families decorated dozens of tables and handed out candy and other goodies to participating children.

“It’s to make sure that kids who are hospitalized have the same sort of accessibility and same sort of experience as every other kid on Halloween,” said Penny Adams, occupational therapist, who helps organize the event.

Event highlights included a donut and cider bar, chili, specialty coffee bar with “scream” and sugar, a bunny petting area, games and multi-sensory Halloween fun. There were plenty of fun costumes and one former patient even came dressed as a Mary Free Bed physical therapist!

This beloved event is hosted by the Mary Free Bed Kids inpatient team with support from the Mary Free Bed Guild, the Mary Free Bed Foundation, and SpartanNash.
