Two West Michigan Whitecaps players took time out of their schedules ahead of playoff season to meet with kids patients at the Mary Free Bed Grand Rapids Campus.
Lucas Bradshaw is recovering from a brain injury in the Mary Free Bed Kids Inpatient Rehabilitation Program. He’s a huge baseball fan, so he took advantage of the opportunity to ask catcher Bennett Lee and infielder Jack Penney lots of questions.Â
“(I asked) what position they play, what team, and who is the hardest team to play,” Bradshaw said. “I’m glad I met them.”
The visit also served as therapy for the patients, who got to pitch, catch and bat with the players.
“Being an athlete like this, you can easily forget that there’s more to life, so it’s always a good reminder to come out and keep perspective in my life,” Penney reflected. “I like to do these things because it reminds me that I’m more than just a baseball player. To get off the field and do things with the community and realize it’s more than just the game we play.”
Both players said they learned a lot from the patients and enjoyed the meaningful connections.
