Why Mary Free Bed: The energy was so good on my interview day! Everyone was so welcoming, seemed happy to go to work, and were eager to teach new residents. There are so many diverse experiences that Mary Free Bed offers, I knew I would get great training.
What’s great about Grand Rapids: I know I'll never get bored! Between all the local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, farmer's markets, being near family, and having the beach a short drive away, West Michigan is a wonderful place to call home.

Why Mary Free Bed: There is great exposure to different fields in PM&R and I wanted to go to a program where I would have the opportunity to explore my interests and potentially discover new ones. Also, everyone at Mary Free Bed wants to support you and see you succeed. It is amazing how friendly and helpful everybody is!
What’s great about Grand Rapids: I'm excited to live in a place with long summer days, magical winter snow, and easy access to nature. With its 37% tree canopy, this is the greenest place I've ever lived in!

Hobbies/Interests: Taking my 2 children to children’s museums and parks. I appreciate documentaries about megalomaniacs which are mostly about ponze schemes, government corruption, and cults. Usually it is a brave woman that decides enough is enough and starts a chain of events to deconstruct unjust power structures. I like chess and creative writing, too!
Clinical Interests: Women’s Rehabilitation.
Why Mary Free Bed: It is a freestanding hospital with a great outpatient pain program. Inpatient I can still have autonomy to manage internal medicine conditions but also have IM and specialties for more complicated conditions. Our outpatient pain clinic most closely aligns with my philosophy on chronic pain management. Grand Rapids is also a great place to raise a family. My husband is very happy here!
What’s great about Grand Rapids: My kids really like their new school!! I love all how many public Montessori schools there are!

Why Mary Free Bed: We are one big team. It’s a program where both residents and faculty truly invest in each other and in their patients. I knew I would be supported through residency and have fun along the way.
What’s great about Grand Rapids: I’m excited to live in a city that always seems to have something going on without feeling overwhelming. Whether it’s a farmers market, a local festival, or trying a new restaurant with friends, I’m looking forward to getting out and exploring everything Grand Rapids has to offer.

Why Mary Free Bed: I chose Mary Free Bed because I loved how involved and ingrained it was in the community! When I did my away rotation here, I could tell that the staff here genuinely wanted to be here and make a difference. Everyone truly cares here and I think that is not only felt by our patients but the community as a whole. I loved that I could be a part of a culture so joyful and engaging! I look forward to coming to work here, and I am so glad this is where we landed!

Why Mary Free Bed: When rotating at Mary Free Bed as a 4th year medical student, an ancillary staff member described it as the Disneyland of rehabilitation - which I agree with wholeheartedly. Being surrounded by passionate, like-minded individuals is infectious in the best way, and I love all of my amazing coresidents like family.
What’s great about Grand Rapids: Grand Rapids and West Michigan give you four seasons full of fun various indoor and outdoor activities that you get to enjoy with locals who are all Midwest Nice (TM). Cycling, beachgoing, skiing (downhill and cross-country), hiking, brewery hopping, and robust live music selections are only some of the many local benefits that boosted my choice of Mary Free Bed for my residency training.

What’s great about Grand Rapids: The outdoor activities! I love the parks, biking/running trails, proximity to Lake Michigan (and all of her wonderful beach towns), and the overall green-ness of the city. Grand Rapids also has many cute walkable neighborhoods that I enjoy exploring

Why Mary Free Bed: Mary Free Bed will provide me the opportunity to treat a diverse population with different health care needs that will challenge me every day to grow as a person as well as a clinician. In addition, the clinical and non-clinical staff are very supportive and knowledgeable. Why Mary Free Bed: I rotated here as a medical student and was impressed by the combination of high-level patient care, education, resident wellness and overall culture. I think the residency program is well-balanced with great exposure to the wide world of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation!
What’s great about Grand Rapids: I think Grand Rapids is the perfect city size for residency: big enough that there’s tons to do (concerts, festivals, breweries, food), and small enough that everything is accessible, convenient, and there’s still great outdoor access (trails, golf courses, LAKES). Also, the people are the best.

Why Mary Free Bed? I was introduced to Mary Free Bed during my first year of medical school when my friend invited me to attend the Mary Free Bed ‘Thrive’ Gala. As I observed the staff interact, I could tell that they truly cared for one another and valued every team member. Their dedication and passion had a meaningful impact on patient recovery, and I was eager to be a part of it. The positive work environment and abundance of resources that Mary Free Bed offers makes this the ideal place to learn and build my foundations as a PM&R physician. I am also interested in academic medicine and am looking forward to engaging with medical students at my alma mater.
Favorite Part About Grand Rapids: I love the abundance of Broadway shows and concerts that come through
town! There are also many great spots to go on walks, my favorites are the Heritage Hill neighborhood and
Reed’s lake. The lakeshore is only a short distance away and makes for the perfect day trip!

Why Mary Free Bed? The facilities are incredible, in particular the prosthetics lab. Additionally, what stands out to me is how approachable everybody is.
Favorite Part About Grand Rapids: I am very excited about living in Grand Rapids! Convenient access to so many nature trails, especially the trail around Reeds Lake and the proximity to Lake Michigan!
