Camp is in Session: Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp is back

It’s the highlight of their summer! Mary Free Bed’s Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp is back in action. Kids and teens age 7-18 will take over Grand Valley State University’s campus playing sports like basketball, lacrosse and tennis. Every year camp provides the chance for kids to come together through adaptive sports to try new activities, enjoy a bit of healthy competition and make lifelong friends.

WHEN:
Monday, July 24 – Friday, July 28
8:45am – 3:30pm

WHERE:
Grand Valley State University,
1 Campus Drive, Allendale, MI (Lot C West)

Junior Wheelchair Sports camp offers campers the chance to try a variety of sports – including basketball, cycling, dodgeball, handball, kayaking, lacrosse, sled hockey, softball and tennis. Returning this year is a camper favorite, a dodgeball tournament on Wednesday, July 26, from 4 – 5:30pm.

A much-anticipated highlight of the week is the annual water fight with the Allendale Fire department. Fire fighters bring their truck to join in the big fight with coaches, volunteers and campers. Water starts flying on Thursday, July 27, at 3pm.

This marks the 39th year of the camp, which is hosted by the Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports program and welcomes campers from Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. The camp is led by instructors who are also competitive wheelchair athletes. Former campers return as volunteers to help mentor and encourage the younger campers.

Camp couldn’t happen without these volunteers and joining them every year are members of the Mary Free Bed Guild who provide and serve lunch daily.
