Mary Free Bed expands partnership to two northern Michigan hospitals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital has launched a joint operating agreement to bring state-of-the-art rehabilitation to patients in Cadillac and Grayling. Mary Free Bed will manage the outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy services at Munson Healthcare’s Cadillac and Grayling hospitals.

This new program is called Mary Free Bed at Munson Healthcare and helps to expand its rehabilitation capabilities, retain its current team of therapists and provide exceptional rehabilitation services to patients in the community.

“Our relationship with leaders and clinicians at Munson Healthcare is expanding, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Kent Riddle, president and CEO of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. “We’re excited to work together to create new rehabilitation programs and services for northern Michigan residents.”

Mary Free Bed first started working with Munson Healthcare in 2015 and strengthened the relationship with more inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services in 2019. Last year, the inpatient unit in Traverse City treated 395 patients with a discharge-to-home status of 81%, exceeding the national average.

Additionally, Mary Free Bed at Munson Medical Center patients achieved more functional improvement than the national average as measured through the Quality Reporting Program. The transition to Mary Free Bed allows for expansion of best practices and specialized care for outpatients in the Cadillac and Grayling areas. The collaboration also will bring a greater focus on stroke and brain injury recovery, joint rehabilitation and cognitive pain therapy.
