Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Honored for Seventh Year by U.S. News

For the seventh year in a row, Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for Best Short-Term Rehabilitation. For the thousands of individuals and families, these ratings from U.S. News aid their search for health care needs.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated over 15,000 nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities and sub-acute care facilities to establish Best Short-Term Rehabilitation, Best Long-Term Care and Best Overall ratings. The Short-Term Rehabilitation rating evaluates patient care following hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke, injury or related condition.

The Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program received an Overall Rating at the highest level and was also rated High Performing for Short-Term Rehabilitation.

“We are again honored U.S. News recognized the hard work and dedication our teams give to our patients each and every day,” said Kiersten Cudney, administrator of the Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program. “Being highlighted in this way helps more people to learn about Mary Free Bed and how we can help after an injury or illness.”

After experiencing a stroke in 2022, Lanny Thodey had heart surgery this fall. She was admitted to the Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Program to help her regain her strength and mobility.

“The staff here are all helpful, encouraging and patient,” Lanny said. When talking about her return home, she said, “One of my main goals was to be strong, independent and have enough stamina on my feet, and the staff has been terrific.”

Located on the fifth floor of the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program is a joint venture with Trinity Health Senior Communities. The multidisciplinary team develops a personalized rehabilitation program to maximize function during an short-term inpatient stay.

Conditions treated in the Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program include:

  • Amputation
  • Cancer
  • General weakness or deconditioning after illness or surgery
  • Heart attack and cardiac surgery
  • Multiple injuries
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Stroke

In addition to the U.S. News recognition, Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation has received a five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, making it a leader in sub-acute care.
