Internships

Our interns are an important part of the team. As part of the Mary Free Bed community, you’ll get an insider’s perspective on the mission that drives us and the culture we live every day. To be eligible for our summer internship program, you must be enrolled in a college, university, or graduate program.

College Student Volunteer Program

This program offers undergraduates insight into their future careers and exposure to a hospital setting. Three sessions are offered based on the semesters of local universities: Fall (August – December), Winter (January – April) and Summer (May – August).

This program can accommodate undergraduate OT, PT, Rec. Therapy or anyone interested in rehabilitation.

The main responsibilities for the Student Volunteers are to assist therapist during session, special projects, cleaning therapy gyms, and helping set up before and after therapy sessions.

The CSVP Program offers 3 sessions: Fall (August – December), Winter (January – April) and Summer (May – August) which are scheduled based on the semesters of local universities.

Students are expected to volunteer on the same day each week for the entire 13-15-week session. Volunteer shifts are 3-4 hours and the average student receives 40-50 hours per session.

Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports Volunteer Program

We’re always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support our WAS sports clinics and teams. Opportunities exist in a variety of activities – including coaching, player and equipment assistance, event support, food service and material creation.

Career Exploration Seminar

Interested in learning about the path to rehabilitation care? Our seminars are designed for high school students 16 years and older, college students who are undecided on a major, or people considering a career change.

Topics presented are subject to staff availability, but participants can expect to learn about nursing, occupational therapy, orthotics and prosthetics, physical therapy, psychology, social work and care management, speech-language pathology and recreational therapy.

You’ll learn about education requirements, potential salary expectations and a typical day’s routine.

The Career Exploration Seminar isn’t appropriate for college students with a chosen academic focus. Instead, you may wish to consider our College Student Volunteer Program.

Therapy Student Fieldwork and Rotations

This is an opportunity for therapy students and residents seeking fieldwork placements and rotations.

Job Shadow

This opportunity gives students a chance to shadow a staff member for up to four hours. It’s offered to undecided students looking to gain insight into the profession. To be eligible, you’ll first need to attend a Career Exploration Seminar.

Each year, we receive hundreds of requests, and we try to be as accommodating as possible. Out of respect for our staff’s time, we’ve developed a process to manage requests and ensure our patient needs always come first.

Job shadow opportunities are available in the following professions:

  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Recreational therapy
  • Nursing
  • Orthotics and prosthetics

This may be the right fit if you’re:
