Mary Free Bed at Valley Health in Virginia Hosts Topping off ceremony for new rehabilitation tower

Valley Health, in partnership with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation, proudly celebrated the topping out of the new Rehabilitation Tower at Winchester Medical Center (WMC), marking the placement of the final steel beam and a major milestone in the construction of this transformative facility.

The topping out ceremony, a tradition in the construction industry symbolizing progress and partnership, brought together Valley Health and Mary Free Bed leaders, team members, construction partners, and community stakeholders to commemorate the continued advancement of the $75 million project. “This moment is about more than steel and concrete, it’s a symbol of our shared commitment to expanding access to world-class rehabilitation care right here in our region,” said Tonya Smith, Chief Operating Officer, Valley Health and President, Winchester Medical Center. “We are proud to see this vision taking shape and look forward to the impact this facility will have on our patients and community.”

The Valley Health Winchester Medical Center Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Tower will centralize and enhance rehabilitation services currently offered at multiple Valley Health locations. Once completed in 2026, the facility will provide acute inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as Orthotics & Prosthetics + Bionics, all under one roof. A climate-controlled skywalk will connect the tower to the main hospital, improving access for medically complex patients and staff.”

Bruce Brasser, Chief Operating Officer of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation, added, “With each beam placed, we’re not just constructing a building; we’re laying the foundation for hope, independence, and the ability to thrive. This new facility will help us to serve more patients with complex needs and support a team that’s passionate about making a real difference in people’s futures.”

As construction continues, Valley Health and Mary Free Bed remain focused on delivering high-quality, patient-centered rehabilitation care for our community.
