Mary Free Bed Graduate Featured on NBC Nightly News
A recent pediatric graduate of Mary Free Bed was featured on the NBC Nightly News this weekend. Mason Madden and his parents were interviewed by NBC News for their weekly segment, “There’s Good News Tonight.”
Mason spent months at Mary Free Bed in rehabilitation after doctors discovered and removed a tumor on his spine. For this young hockey fan, the hours of therapy didn’t keep him from his sport. His family and friends, a few pros brought the hockey to him.
After winning their regional tournament, the Grandville High School Varsity hockey team surprised Mason at the hospital. Days later, pros from the Grand Rapids Griffins visited Mason and family, giving team swag away.
Mason also got a day pass from the hospital to visit a Sled Wings game, and tried out sled hockey. His rehabilitation wrapped up with a “tap out” from hospital staff, family and friends as he left the hospital to return home.
The way the community rallied around Mason, really grabbed attention of the producers of the NBC Nightly News, and so this national news outlet included his story in their good news segment. What the clip here, it’s the third story in the segment from the full broadcast:
