New Mary Free Bed PM+R Residency Program Graduates

The next generation of physicians is ready to help rebuild patient’s lives after graduating from Mary Free Bed’s Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency. This month, three physicians will finish their post-graduate training at Mary Free Bed’s advanced PM+R Residency Program.

Mary Free Bed’s residency includes clinical, educational and research opportunities in all areas of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Resident physicians gain experience working with brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple trauma, amputation, cancer, COVID-19 rehabilitation and other diagnoses.

“Graduates of our program are uniquely and rigorously prepared to become leaders in clinical practice, academic medicine, and research at the local, regional, and national levels,” says Dr. Lamm, assistant medical director, PM+R Residency Program.

MEET THE 2022 MARY FREE BED PM+R RESIDENCY PROGRAM GRADUATES:

Nicholas Patrick Gut, M.D.

A graduate of St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, Dr. Gut completed a transitional year of training at Mercy Health Grand Rapids. After graduating from Mary Free Bed Physiatry Residency, he’s headed to Houston for a Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship at the Texas Institute of Rehabilitation and Research.

Clayton Joseph Luyk, M.D.

Dr. Luyk graduated medical school from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed a transitional year internship at Spectrum Health/Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. After graduating from Mary Free Bed Physiatry Residency, he will remain at Mary Free Bed in Grand Rapids as a general physiatrist with a focus on inpatient rehabilitation and consultative services.

Temilola Yvonne Abdul, M.D.

Dr. Abdul, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, completed a clinical pharmacology research fellowship in musculoskeletal gene therapy following two years of a pediatric residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. After graduating from Mary Free Bed Physiatry Residency, she will begin a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Temilola Abdul was joined by supporters who traveled from her home country, Nigeria. Abdul knows the importance of a supportive community – after losing her father when she was six, and then losing her mother to cancer just three years ago, she looks to her community for support. Her loyal “village” as she calls it, was there in numbers, celebrating Abdul as she reached the goals she set with her mother years before.

The class of 2022 was celebrated at a ceremony held at Mary Free Bed CEO Kent Riddle’s house. Family and friends of the residents attended to congratulate them on their accomplishments. View photos from the event in the gallery below.
