Factors considered include availability and consistency of nurse staffing along with fall prevention, and Mary Free Bed ranked better than the Michigan and national averages. Additionally, 79% of Mary Free Bed patients received more physical therapy compared to the Michigan average of 34% and the national average of 42%.

“We’re extremely excited about this ranking and recognition,” said Leslie Shanlian, administrator of Mary Free Bed’s Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program. “Our staff members really concentrate on getting patients back to their lives, and our higher-than-average return-to-home rate proves that.”

Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation, a partnership between Mary Free Bed and Trinity Health Senior Communities, offers short-term inpatient rehabilitation for patients recovering from an illness, injury or surgery. It’s located on the fifth floor of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids. The program’s multidisciplinary team coordinates a less intense level of rehabilitation than the acute-care programs on floors three and four.

  • General weakness or deconditioning after illness or surgery
  • Heart attack and cardiac surgery
