Travis on ‘road to a healthier life’ with help from Bronson, Mary Free Bed

Travis Laws was determined to get his life back and knew it wouldn’t be easy. Bedridden for several years, the 46-year-old from Allegan had significant health issues, including a large mass on his right leg. He weighed nearly 1,300 pounds.

Specialists from Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo cared for Travis and developed a diet and exercise program he followed diligently. He lost enough weight to have the mass surgically removed. Bronson and Mary Free Bed clinicians collaborated on a plan for Travis to begin specialized rehabilitation when he was medically stable and strong enough to tolerate intensive therapy. He spent six months at Bronson, where he continued to lose weight, before transferring to Mary Free Bed.

Travis participated in a comprehensive rehabilitation program of physical, occupational and recreational therapies combined with psychology services. In this video, you’ll hear from the teams at Bronson and Mary Free Bed, who provided the medical expertise and support to help Travis reach his goals and restore his independence.

“Things at home are going slow but steady,” Travis said. “The care I received has given me a great jumpstart on the road to a healthier life.”
