‘Bikes for the Rest Us’ Gives Freedom on Wheels

Last weekend, over 50 children and adults with disabilities were introduced to adaptive bicycling. Thanks to Mary Free Bed’s “Bikes for the Rest of Us” event, participants were given a new lease on freedom and mobility.

At the event, pre-registered participants were paired with therapists who assisted in matching their physical needs to the most appropriate biking equipment.

“Our staff are skilled in learning how to work with disability” said Maria Besta, manager of Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports and recreational therapy at Mary Free Bed. “At Bikes for the Rest of Us, they team up with our vendor partners to determine the best bike and adaptions for each individual.”

Whether the children or adults have had a life-altering event or were born with a disability, this event makes it easy for people to try multiple bikes and find the best fit for them.

“Some participants come to the event and they’re very apprehensive,” said Besta. “But when they get on a bike, they realize the freedom and independence that comes with it. The smiles are priceless.”

This year, more than 50 volunteers, including Mary Free Bed therapists, nurses and staff, helped give participants new access to recreational cycling that promotes health and wellness. “Bikes for the Rest of Us” has taken place for over 20 years, and thanks to a donation from the Mary Free Bed Guild, participants will receive funding to help offset the cost of the new adapted bicycles.

“I’ve never had a bike,” says participant Irina Bird, 25, who was born with phocomelia syndrome. “The staff made sure I had a bike that was fit just for me – exactly to my unique specifications – and that I will be confident riding it.”

Biking equipment was provided by Airway Mobility & Rehab, West Michigan Bike and Fitness, AMBUCS and Creative Mobility. Participants who grew out of their adaptive bikes were able to bring in their old one to donate to another family. Every rider was also fitted with a free helmet, thanks to the Kiwanis Clubs of Urbandale/Battle Creek and Grand Rapids.
