Mary Free Bed launches medical residency program

Grand Rapids, Mich. — Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, the fifth-largest freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the United States, will soon offer a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program. The new three-year program was recently approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

“Mary Free Bed has been a leader in the field of medical rehabilitation for 125 years, and we are thrilled to teach new physicians to carry on our tradition of restoring hope and freedom though expert medical care,” said Daniel Fechtner, M.D., Mary Free Bed’s residency program director. “We are building an education capability that will reflect our clinical offerings.”

The Mary Free Bed PM&R Residency Program will provide a comprehensive, well-rounded experience for physicians interested in becoming board-certified physiatrists. The rigorous training program will encompass clinical, educational and research opportunities in all areas of PM&R, including spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputee care, pediatric rehabilitation and cancer rehabilitation.

“Our extensive rehabilitation services and research program make us an ideal organization for a PM&R residency,” said Dr. Michael Jakubowski, Mary Free Bed’s Chief Medical Officer.  “We believe our residents, patients, staff, hospital, community and our medical specialty will all benefit from this valuable endeavor.”

The residency program is structured to offer four positions per year. All rotations will be based at Mary Free Bed, which recently opened a new hospital building as part of a $66.4 million expansion and renovation project. Mary Free Bed provides the most comprehensive rehabilitation services in the region, including acute, sub-acute and outpatient rehabilitation, and home health care.
