Mary Free Bed at Sparrow completes $ 7.5 million expansion and renovation

Lansing, Mich. – The $7.5 million Mary Free Bed at Sparrow expansion and renovation project is finished and will be completely open for patients on November 17, 2015.

There are 40 private rooms, two state-of-the-art therapy gyms and several social areas. The 45,000-square-foot adult rehabilitation program spans the sixth floor of all three Sparrow Hospital towers.

Mary Free Bed at Sparrow is a joint venture between Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids and Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. An open house to celebrate the completed project is being held Monday, November 9, 2015.

As part of the project, the number of adult rehabilitation beds increased from 24 to 40. “We’re able to care for an additional 375 patients each year,” said Kris Tennant, Director of Mary Free Bed at Sparrow. “We’re thrilled to be able to treat more people who need intensive neurological, orthopedic and stroke rehabilitation. They’ll recover in surroundings that are not only beautiful but also technologically up-to-date and private.”

Mary Free Bed at Sparrow offers realistic rehabilitation in the form of a full-size Chevrolet Traverse, which was donated by General Motors. A mock Capital Area Transportation Authority bus has also been recreated. Patients will work on getting in and out of the vehicles, loading items and maneuvering assistive devices.

The Traverse is located in the Accident Fund Holdings Therapy Gym. “Accident Fund is proud to support Mary Free Bed at Sparrow,” said Lisa Corless, Chief Administration Officer. She is also a member of the Sparrow Foundation Board. “It’s exciting to see this new rehabilitation gym that will help bring positive patient outcomes through best practice physical, recreational and occupational therapy as well as speech pathology.”
