Mary Free Bed expands services to offer chiropractic care to patients

Patients have yet another choice of treatment with the innovative addition of chiropractic to rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed. This holistic, whole-body approach to care provides patients with ways to manage and prevent pain without medications or surgery.

Joining Mary Free Bed’s outpatient Spine Center team is Dr. Tom Fowler, the only doctor of chiropractic in Michigan who’s board certified in rehabilitation. Dr. Fowler has more than four decades of chiropractic experience, including 30-plus years in private practice.

“It’s what patients want and requested,” said Bryan Williams, vice president of Outpatient Operations. “And it’s what evidence supports.”

Chiropractors treat more than 35 million Americans every year, including adults and children. Research shows it’s one of the safest, drug-free approaches to effective treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. This includes back pain, neck pain, headaches and discomfort in the arms, legs, hips and shoulders. Other conditions include disc injuries, sciatica, scoliosis, tendonitis and pregnancy-related pain.

Chiropractic careDr. Tom Fowler may be a patient’s primary treatment or part of a broader rehabilitation plan. The Spine Center team includes physiatrists (doctors who specialize in rehabilitation), nurse practitioners, physical and occupational therapists, and psychologists.

“By adding chiropractic, we truly have a multidisciplinary approach to health care, all in one place,” Fowler said. “Mary Free Bed is a leader in rehabilitation, and the addition of chiropractic is yet another example of our commitment to providing conservative, cost-effective care with positive outcomes.”

Samantha Crossley, pictured here, agrees. The 29-year-old Grand Rapids woman started seeing Dr. Fowler as soon as he began treating patients at Mary Free Bed. No stranger to chiropractic – or Mary Free Bed – Crossley seeks treatment to relieve chronic migraines.

“I’m a Mary Free Bed employee and am well-aware of the patient-centered care all of our clinicians provide,” said Crossley, who also said treatment has “helped immensely.” “I carry all of my stress in my neck, which causes me to have a lot of headaches. Adjustments from Dr. Fowler help alleviate that, and I’ve noticed that chiropractic care is good for my whole body.”
